What i heard

As a second batch student, the 1st lesson I attended in USM was conducted by Professor Wan on 21st July 2010. Scale was the topic that he taught on that day. The video he showed was amazing, is about the measuring unit that people used to use nowadays--meter. The video was make by an interior design student, showing the look of the planet and the people when the distance is small to 10 to the power of -21 and up to 10 to the power of +20.
As Prof. Wan said, knowledge is very important, no matter what course we are studying we shouldn’t limit what we have to learn; inversely, we should learn beyond the compass of inquiry. No matter how rich we are, how many A’s we score, how beautiful we look, without knowledge our body was just an empty shell. Knowledge is the only thing that people cannot grab from you. Hence, we have to learn no matter how old we are and how bad the condition is.

1. Many decades ago, people was using inches, feet and arm as a scale in measuring the length of a distance. And now, we use meter. Why? Is it more accurate? Is it more consistent? Or is it just a system for people to follow? If it is a system that people are following now, then we can say that the system is changing time by time. Maybe in the future someone will create a new measuring scale and find out that using meter as a scale is not that accurate. At the time, people is going to change again. A good change is worth to be proud of, one of the students from our class had asked Prof. Wan what can he do to change the world after knowing that the group of conspirators are going to control the population of the whole world.

2. Occident is a new word I learnt on that day. It means “west” and for east is called orient. There is a lot of thing that we do not know and that’s why we are here studying and that’s why Prof. Wan is here to teach us what we knew and what we don’t. No matter what he said, the only thing is--we have to believe in it! =)
